Dr. Dre played a major role in popularizing gangsta rap in the 80s and 90s, beginning when he founded N.W.A with Ice Cube & Eazy-E in 1986. Not only has Dr. Dre climbed the charts as a rapper, but he also blessed the world with iconic music as a producer working with some of the best hip-hop artists of all time, including Tupac, Eminem, and Snoop Dogg. Even further, he has become a household name as an entrepreneur with the founding of Beats by Dre headphones.

Dre’s popularity has stood the test of time, with N.W.A’s “Straight Outta Compton” climbing the Billboard 200 in 1989 and again in 2015 accompanying the release of the movie by the same name. His 1999 single “Still D.R.E.” also resurfaced in recent years on TikTok, with musicians covering the recognizable, iconic piano intro. Dr. Dre’s relevance has crossed cultural lines (with 12 UK top 40s) and generations. His multi-generational popularity is made evident by the fact that he will perform with Snoop Dogg and Eminem–two artists he produced music for–at the 2022 Super Bowl LVI on February 13, over 35 years after breaking into the music industry.

Luckily, the Indianapolis community can ride out this nostalgic high with the return of 90’s gangsta rap at The Vogue on Saturday, February 19 for Dre Day, a birthday celebration recognizing Dr. Dre’s contribution to popularizing gangsta rap across the world. Come celebrate with us as some of Indy’s best local DJs—including DJ MetroGnome, Topspeed, Goodwill Hunter, and Mr. Kinetik—play the 90’s rap, hip-hop, and R&B hits that will continue to influence and shaped the music industry for decades to come.
